Quetzaltenango, also known as Xela, is the second largest city in Guatemala. It is located in the Western Highlands region of the country at an elevation of 2,330 meters above sea level. The city has a population of about 213,000 people and is the capital of Quetzaltenango Department.
The city was founded in the early 16th century by the Spanish conquistadores. It served as a strategic base for the conquest of the highlands and played an important role in the country’s subsequent history.
