TLDR

Xela makes a solid base for day trips into the Western Highlands. The best single option is Fuentes Georginas hot springs, 40 minutes southeast near Zunil, Q60 entry. Chichicastenango market on Thursday or Sunday is the cultural pick. For active travellers, the Santiaguito viewpoint at Llanos del Pinal gives you volcano eruptions without the dawn climb. Most day trips need an early start and Q150 to Q700 depending on transport.

Insider Tip

Start at 7am. Cloud cover over the volcanoes builds fast by mid morning and most of the good day trip destinations from Xela are in exposed mountain terrain. A 7am departure gets you back by late afternoon with time for a proper dinner in Zona 1.

Fuentes Georginas Hot Springs

Best Day Trips from Quetzaltenango

This is the default day trip from Xela and the one most visitors enjoy most. Fuentes Georginas sits 20 km southeast of Quetzaltenango, up a steep switchback road from the village of Zunil, at 2,500 metres inside a cloud forest canyon. Six geothermal pools, three near the main facility and three smaller secret pools past a short waterfall trail. The main pool runs around 38 to 40 Celsius. The mountain air outside it can be 12 Celsius even at midday. That temperature swing is exactly what makes the place work.

Entry is Q60 for foreigners, Q30 for Guatemalans. The extra secret pools cost Q25. Opening is 8am to 6pm daily and the trick is to arrive at opening. Between 8am and 10am on a weekday the pools are usually empty or near empty, the cloud forest mist is still lifting off the water, and you get the atmosphere you came for. By noon on a Saturday it is families, Guatemalan tour groups and a chatty crowd. Bring a swimsuit, flip flops and Q100 to Q150 cash for entry and a basic comedor lunch at the site restaurant. A round-trip Uber from Zona 1 runs Q150 to Q200. Going on the cheap, take the chicken bus to Zunil from Terminal Minerva (Q5 to Q8), then a pickup truck up the mountain (Q15 to Q25).

Chichicastenango Market Thursday and Sunday

Chichicastenango is one of the largest and most famous indigenous markets in the Americas and it runs twice a week, Thursday and Sunday, with Sunday being the bigger day. It is a 1.5 to 2 hour shuttle ride from Xela through the Western Highlands, across the Cuatro Caminos junction and down the mountain road into the Quiche valley. You arrive by 9am, spend three to four hours walking the textile stalls around the Santo Tomas church, eat a market lunch, and head back by 2pm. The market itself fills the entire town centre. Woven huipiles, wool blankets, ceremonial masks, silver jewelry, leather, carved wood and enough souvenirs to furnish a small house.

Shuttles from Zona 1 run Q100 to Q150 per person round trip and leave between 6am and 7am on market days. A chicken bus via Los Encuentros is cheaper at Q30 to Q40 one way but adds an hour and requires changing buses, which is not fun with purchases. Bring small denominations of quetzales, Q50s and Q20s, because bargaining is expected and change for larger notes is limited. Prices drop 30 to 50 percent from the first asking if you negotiate politely. Santiaguito Viewpoint at Llanos del Pinal

Best Day Trips from Quetzaltenango
Best Day Trips from Quetzaltenango

If you want an active volcano without climbing Santa Maria at 1am, this is the workaround. Llanos del Pinal is a flat village 25 minutes by car southwest of Xela. From there a 2 hour moderate hike gets you to a viewpoint where you can watch Santiaguito erupt every 20 to 40 minutes. Santiaguito is the active dome complex on Santa Maria’s south flank and it has been continuously erupting since 1922. The viewpoint gives you the sound and the ash plumes without requiring the full summit climb of the parent volcano.

The trail is marked, moderate in difficulty, around 6 km round trip with about 400 metres of elevation gain. Most visitors finish it in 4 hours including time to sit and watch an eruption or two. A local guide at the trailhead (ask at the village shop) costs Q80 to Q120 and is worth it for route knowledge and safety. Bring 2 litres of water, a hat, sunscreen and snacks. The viewpoint itself has no facilities. For context on climbing Santa Maria itself as a more committing option, see our Volcan Santa Maria guide.

Lake Atitlan as a Long Day Trip

Panajachel on the north shore of Lake Atitlan is 2.5 hours by shuttle from Xela. Doable as a day trip but tight. Leave Zona 1 at 6am, arrive at 8:30am, grab a boat across to San Pedro La Laguna or Santa Cruz La Laguna (Q30 to Q50), spend four hours on the lake, boat back by 3pm and be back in Xela by 6pm. You see the lake and one village. You do not get the Atitlan experience, which is staying in a lakeside village for two or three days.

Shuttles run Q125 to Q175 one way, Q200 to Q300 round trip. Leaving by chicken bus is possible (change at Los Encuentros) for Q40 to Q60 total but takes 3.5 hours each way. If your schedule only allows a day trip, do it. If you have flexibility, stay overnight in San Marcos or San Pedro, see the lake properly and return to Xela refreshed. The Boca Costa coffee farms south of Xela are a better day trip alternative if you want half a day out and a change of climate.

Planning Multi Stop Days and Transport Costs

If you want to combine two destinations, group them by direction. Fuentes Georginas and Zunil village pair naturally because they are on the same southeast axis. Santiaguito viewpoint and a drive past the Almolonga farming valley also pair well since Almolonga is on the road to Zunil. Chichicastenango does not pair with anything because it pulls you east and eats the whole day. Trying to combine Atitlan with Fuentes Georginas in one day means six hours of driving, do not attempt it.

Typical transport costs. A private driver with a sedan for a half day (Fuentes Georginas or Santiaguito) runs Q400 to Q600 total, including waiting. A full day covering two stops runs Q700 to Q1,000. Shared shuttles are cheaper per person but run on fixed schedules. Uber to Fuentes Georginas one way is around Q150, but getting an Uber back down the mountain is unreliable because there are few drivers waiting at the pools. Either arrange a return or budget the return Uber as a wait of 30 to 45 minutes.

Bring cash. ATMs are rare outside Xela and Panajachel. Q300 to Q400 in mixed denominations covers entries, snacks, tips and unexpected expenses on a full day out. For current weather and road conditions, check with your hotel reception the morning of the trip, they will know if the road to Fuentes Georginas is open after heavy rain.

It is a stretch but workable. Panajachel is 2.5 hours by shuttle (Q125 to Q175 each way). Leave at 6am, arrive by 9am, take a boat to San Pedro or Santa Cruz for a few hours and head back by 3pm. Most visitors regret not staying overnight once they see the lake.

How far is Volcan Santiaguito viewpoint from Quetzaltenango?

The viewpoint at Llanos del Pinal is about 45 minutes from Zona 1 by car or taxi. You can watch Santiaguito erupt every 20 to 40 minutes and the hike up is moderate, 2 hours round trip. Go before 9am for clearer views before the afternoon cloud cover rolls in.
